Welcome to
church of the holy comforter

The Church of the Holy Comforter, established in 1857, is an Anglican church located in downtown Sumter, South Carolina. We are committed to glorifying Jesus Christ by making disciples and transforming lives through His love and power. Our deep desire is to grow in faith and reach others with the gospel message. We would love for you to join us!

Worship services are available Sundays at 8:30 am and 11:00 am (Sunday school is available for all ages at 9:45 am. Nursery is available beginning at 9:45 during Sunday School and 11:00 service). Live streaming is available on our Facebook Page and Youtube Channel.

  • What time is the service and when should I arrive?
Worship Services are Sundays at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. Sunday school is available for all ages at 9:45 am and Nursery is available beginning at 9:45 during Sunday School and 11:00 service.
  • Is there childcare during the service?
Nursery All ages of children are welcome to stay with parents throughout our services. For parents who wish to focus on the service, we provide nursery care for infants through age 2. The nursery is available beginning at 9:45 for Adult Sunday School and the 11:00 worship service. Children’s Ministry We encourage families to worship together during the service. We find this is the best way to integrate children into the life of the church. We are not disturbed by noises. You may want to bring quiet toys for your little ones or request an activity bag from an usher. Many families find the balcony or south (right side when facing altar) transept the most friendly place to sit as restrooms are easily accessed from these locations.
  • Who goes to your church?
We have quite a mixture of people at Holy Comforter. Our congregation truly spans the ages, from newborns to folks in their 80s. You’ll find just about every type of person here – married, single, divorced, widowed – professionals, workers, retired – lifelong Sumter residents, and those who have just recently moved to Sumter. But even more important than the kind of people who go here is the kind of people who are welcome here – everyone!
  • What is the dress code?
We want you to be comfortable and focused on the service. Wear what helps you think more about Jesus and less about yourself or what you’re wearing. Come as you are!
  • What kind of adult education/spiritual growth opportunities do you offer?
Sunday school is available for all ages at 9:45 am on Sunday. The class can vary in size, format, and age of their members, but all are glad to have guests join them. We also offer a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship outside of Sunday morning such as small groups or outreach. You can learn more about these opportunities here.
  • What denomination is Holy Comforter affiliated with?
Church of the Holy Comforter is a parish in the Anglican Diocese of South Carolina, which is a member of the Anglican Church in North America. Our worship follows the 2019 Book of Common Prayer- a collection of scriptures and ancient prayers that provide a structure for our worship together. Here’s a great resource for learning more about Anglicanism.
